A chunky square knot macrame braid
Today we're learning a new way to make a chunky braid with just square knots! Believe it or not, this rather fancy looking knot sennit is nothing but a series of square knots. You could easily incorporate this macrame sennit onto a macrame wall hanging or a plant hanger, as the filler cords of this sennit are straight and thus they could even hold the weight of a little plant.
Step by step knotting instructions
You will need six cords for this sennit. I folded three cords in half and attached them onto a little dowel with a lark's head knot for demonstration purposes.
The cord on the right and the three cords on the left will be our working cords. They are more or less the same length. The two remaining cords only need to be as long as the sennit you want to make.
- Take the single cord on the right and pass it over the filler cords and under the three working cords on the left.
- Bring the three working cords on the left under the filler cords to the right and through the loop over the single working cord.
- Tighten this knot, but be careful not to pull the cords too tight. The three working cords that stay together but never cross each other.
That is one half knot, half of a square knot. Now let's repeat that in the opposite direction.
- Bring the single working cord back to the right over the filler cords and under the other three working cords.
- Bring the three working cords under the filler cords and over the single working cord through the loop.
- Tighten carefully. Make sure the three working cords do not cross each other at any point and that your knot remains flat.
That's it - you made one square knot with your cords. Now just keep repeating these steps as many times as you want!
