Braided soumak weave technique
We’re going to make two soumak rows with both the yellow and pink cords but they are not identical, because we want our soumak to look like a braid. We’re going to angle our soumak “bumps” towards each other so that they make what looks like a braid.
For these soumaks we are using the 8mm yellow cord from Ganxxet and the 9mm pink cord from Bobbiny. You’ll need two pieces of 150cm or 60 inches of each cord. We’re making the rows in the two spots where we left 3cm or 1.2” of space.
Step by step
- First, let’s fold one of our yellow cords in half and attach it to the first cord on the left with a reversed lark’s head, in a way that the cord ends are facing the center.
- Drop the upper cord and only weave the bottom cord in first.
- Grab the next two warps and pass the cord behind then, from right to left. Pull the bundle through to form your first slanted stitch. Pull the cord from above the stitch you just created. Don’t pull too tight.
The weaving is always done in the opposite direction compared to where we are going.
- Then grab the next two warps to the right and pass the cord bundle behind the two warps from right to left. Pull through, but not too tight.
- Continue like this all the way to the middle.
- In the middle wrap around the last two warps twice.
Now do the same with the second cord. We’re weaving it in the same way, but when you pull the cord bundle back to the front, do it so that you come to the front from below of the stitch and not above it. This will create the braided effect.
